Krustyb’s Blog

{December 7, 2008}   Social Bookmarking

I like Delicious and take it with me wherever I log in. However – shocking revelation -I don’t use it as a tool to share my bookmarks with anyone else, basically because I just don’t have time to tag in a way which would be useful to others i.e. by thinking of the many different ways in which my saved pages will be searched. I think this is probably where Delicious falls down – if I don’t have time to do it – will the students?

In addition – we all know the pitfalls of unstructured keyword searching as opposed to say a subject heading search or a controlled language search. The fact that tags are very random and subjective means that it can be quite difficult to retrieve a comprehensive list of webpages. Possibly “tagging” would be a good way to illustrate to people who complain that the “Dewey” system is too complicated, why we organise/structure information in the way we do.

Just reading what I’ve just typed – I sound really negative about it. I actually really really like it and use it loads – I think it could be very useful and I need to start tagging in a more altruistic way. There’s also potential for it to be included in info skills sessions to introduce the importance of varying keywords.

{December 1, 2008}   Rss and all that jazz!!

Have spent the weekend at dancing shows/dress rehearsals and still have the lyrics to Chicago buzzing round my head so apologies for the title.

I have previously used Google reader as my rss-reading tool which I thought was really good and I have to say that I think I still prefer it to Bloglines as I found it returned better search results. I just find it a bit more simplistic but whether that is because I am just used to it I’m not sure – I will, however, persevere with Bloglines. Having said that I really enjoyed this part of the course and seeing what is out there.

It made me think of how useful this could be especially to research/final year students and that I could possibly start to incorporate this into advanced information skills sessions as a way of encouraging students to keep up with current trends/new releases/ latest blogs. I’m also thinking of highlighting this with EBSCO services which has a one-step RSS search facility (probably more information databases have this facility – I need to investigate further). The possibilities are endless!! Anyway to finish off – I’m not keen on Sydic8, the results were OK but I found it really slow but I did like Topix.net as it worked really well and I found some really good sites.

Oh my word this is just so clever!!! I never even knew this existed. Have just been using Multicolour search lab and have come up with this!! If ever this uses its powers for evil we are all doomed.

Must admit that I came close this week to chucking my computer in the canal as nothing seemed to work. However I’ve had much more success this afternoon and am once again smiling at my computer like the geek I am. I’m quite interested in possibly using the flickr tag system to illustrate how keyword searching and controlled language searching works. Will have a think about it later.

I’m about a week behind schedule at the moment but I’m hoping to look at RSS feeds etc this weekend so I’ll hopefully catch up. Must admit that I can’t wait and am really enjoying this whole experience. I’m finding it really addictive and absorbing – time just flies by!!

MUST NOT FORGET TO PICK UP CHILDREN FROM SCHOOL!!!!

Newby Hall – Jun 2008

I spent a full hour yesterday at work trying to upload a flickr image into my blog and was unable to do it. I’ve just tried it at home and have done it in minutes – Mr Ben Magic!!!!

Anyway- the reason I’ve uploaded this photo is because myself, Maddy and William went to Newby Hall in the summer and had a wonderful time. However, I dropped my camera and lost all my photos so I’m so pleased to find pictures of most of the sculptures on flickr.
